West Drayton Mountain Bike Club

Day 7 The final day and the legs were starting to feel the pain, today it was going to be a climb of 1000 Mt to start the day and this was a mixture of lanes, fire roads and single track, we split into 3 groups, myself and Darren, Mike and Karen with Dave driving Kasia to the meeting point just over halfway around the ride . Darren who had found his legs was giving it big turns as he rushed to the rendezvous point to meet Dave and Kasia not sure which of the two were the big attraction for him.On the last single track uphill section both myself and Darren questioned our footwear as we had a bit of Hike a bike , although as Darren was in front of me and got off first I was clearly the morale winner then it was onto the last road section up the last Col of the trip the Col du marchairuz Darren was favourite to take the honours at the top but despite piling on the pressure it was like a Chris Froome/Alberto Contador epic battle , however this time round it was Darren aka Froome who had to give best as I managed to crest the last ridge just ahead of him. The master and pupil relationship back on course for a little bit longer.A short descent and Darren went on to meet Kasia and Dave and took over the van driving duties whilst I pressed onto Nyon. Once again the temperatures were in the high 30's but with Lake Leman at Nyon being the final destination this spurred me on and shorty after leaving Darren I was soon into the town, a quick rendezvous with Darren and Kasia who had driven the last section and then myself and Darren were washing the sweat off in the Lake and how refreshing was that..A few coffees and ice creams were consumed as we waited for the next rider in, this time it was big Dave and it was clear that he had managed to depart his bike at some time as he was showing off some fresh bloody war wounds. Not long afterwards the two smiley people, Mike and Karen appeared and then we were all apart from poor old Kasia who had to keep her wrist dressing dry back into the Lake for another dip and then back out to dry off in the sunshine, this was some way to finish a ride, the end destination could not have been better and the temperature was hot, hot hot. Eventually all good things come to an end and it as time to pack up for the journey back to blighty and an over night stop at Chaumont which was a lovely place and compared to the cost of Switzerland very good value although the chillies in the Mexican was nearly as hot as Darren's pace in the mountains. A big thanks to all those that took part, in no particular order, Smiley Mike B Aka Dr Rohipnol who did a superb job on the GPS routes and for his stints driving the van, Werewolf Kasia who until her broken wrist had on the first 2 days showed very impressive form on the uphills and will no doubt be back stronger and fitter soon and despite having to endure the rest of the trip watching rather than taking part kept her spirits up. Darren for trying to rip my legs off on nearly everyday and also taking on some of the driving duties and for his educational lectures in the evening, Big Dave for his unselfishness by missing out on some of the riding to Drive the van and on other days keep Karen who was sans GPS on the correct trail, Karen for her usual cheerfulness. So where are we going next year? ...
